New York City’s World Cup: Cosmos Copa

Every year, 36 ‘national teams’, comprised of the diverse communities that make up New York City, come together to play in a World Cup tournament called Cosmos Copa. Organized by the New York Cosmos and heralded as a one-of-a-kind event that showcases the best of NYC, this grassroots tournament attracts a huge following in a spectacular setting.

We’ve seen the tournament first hand, and there really is nothing like watching the fittest eleven men in New York City’s Japanese community go toe-to-toe with New York’s Colombian brothers. There are also few events in the ~~States~~ world able to provide so much cultural diversity while maintaining the peace and a common goal. The film capturing America’s coolest amateur tournament drops next week, and if the the trailer above is anything to go by, we’ll have our popcorn/tapas/Peroni/empanadas/Pão de queijo ready. Exercise shown to be bad for health - at least some peoples' health

Exercise can make someone less healthy says a new study.

The US study comprising researchers from a number of institutions looked at over 1500 people and their reactions to vigorous exercise, finding that at least 10 percent of the participants suffered worse health afterwards.

The researchers studied how 1,687 people reacted to rigorous exercise. They found that 10 percent of the participants got worse, based on one or more measures of heart disease, including blood pressure and levels of insulin and HDL cholesterol. In fact, 7 percent got worse on at least two measures.

“There are a lot of people out there looking for any excuse not to exercise,” William Haskell, emeritus professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center told the New York Times.

“This might be an excuse for them to say, ‘Oh, I must be one of those 10 percent.’ “

It is stil unclear as to why some of the participants got worse.

Researchers said, according to Gizmodo, that the study should be no excuse not to exercise.

The costs still outweigh the benefits.

The study was published in the journal PloS One.

A new campaign from Change4Life exposing the ‘hidden nasties’ in everyday foods and helping people to be ‘food smart.’

Change4Life have joined forces with a range of food manufacturers and ITV to host the first ever health-focused ad break.

The ‘ad takeover’, which reveals a shocking 17 sugar cubes in a bottle of cola and more than a wine glass of fat in a large pizza, will air for the first time tonight, during Coronation Street, and marks the launch of a new year healthy eating drive.

The unique ad slot is the centrepiece of the campaign that encourages the public to think about the ‘hidden nasties’ in everyday foods so they can better manage the amount of salt, fat and sugar in their diets. It also includes a range of healthy eating tools and information from recipes to money-off vouchers.

Everyone that signs up to the campaign will get a free ‘Food Smart Meal Mixer’ with lots of quick, easy, healthier recipes with enough combinations to eat a different daily menu every day for 6 years.

This year’s campaign features a brand new smart phone and tablet app featuring the meal mixer and a handy shopping list function to help people make healthy choices in the supermarket.

Obesity costs the NHS £5 billion each year with 40,000 people dying of conditions attributable to being overweight or obese. And the latest figures show that the number of children who are overweight or obese doubles during primary school.

Here are two posters from the Ministry of Health’s Sedentary Lifestyle campaign. Sedentary meaning irregular or no exercise. I feel that they work extremely well, they are quite shocking, very clear and blunt about the detriments of a lack of exercise.

Make Exercise a Happy Habit

To encourage people to see the benefits of changing their actions in everyday life that would lead to overall improved physical fitness. We have the choice between them following the same habits and customs that we do everyday, or to change them. Every new day we could do things differently than we have done before.

You will produce pieces of work that will inspire a defined target audience to make a lifestyle change that will lead to improved physical fitness and better well-being. This is not a campaign to encourage gym membership.

The campaign will be for the Department of Health.

Brief Requirements

Create an integrated transport campaign encouraging people to make exercise a happy habit.

All the media using must be seen as intergrated, to reinforce the message of the overall campaign.

The Department of Health logo must be placed within the campaign discreetly but should demonstrate that it represents the department.

This is two-part project. the first part being the integrated transport campaign which will be implemented within a public transport system and comprise of at least two elements, for example, an Adshell poster and bus graphics.

Initial photos for our Journey of an Object brief. My decision to use my Rubik’s cube has clearly been vindicated, the toy shows off a perfect balance of colours which can be backdropped by any colour and still look different and pleasing to the eye.

Logo Type

After being paired with a friend, this brief required us to sum up in three words the personality or traits I saw in the person, and they would do the same. Ultimately the type would suggest what that person is like. Here are my examples forour logo type brief.

Going left to right, the first one conveys alex’s creativity and knowledge of the area he is interested in, one of the first things I noticed about when I met him. Splashes were, in my eyes, the best way to say creativity, as the word goes hand in hand with art and design.

Secondly, I wanted to pick up Alex’s interest in games, believing it would be so easy to get the typeface of a popular game and use his name, instead I decided to look for a more retro “insert coin” sort of style of font which you see in arcades of the 80’s and 90’s. After a tinkering with the composition, this example gives the feel of a video game character’s name.

Finally, for the last two, I took photographs of various types of concrete and skateboard grip, as Alex is also a bit of a skater, and used a textured layer to fill the type, reflecting a roughed up surface.

TYPE + TAPE

After being put into five groups, this typography brief was based around using areas of AUCB in which to display a word, using tape to convey a message or emotion, relevant to the space.

After being out-voted on where it should be within the group, they let me choose the word. I decided “around” was the perfect word in which to describe the area of the campus.

Using stop-motion to capture the making and the arduous task of removing the tape (where it would ultimatley take the whole class to help get it off) this video is the end product of the task, and I am so happy with it.

MAPPING ARNOLD CIRCUS

Mapping, the systematic organisation of complex information in a form which may be transported and reinterpreted, is an activity that has much in common with graphic design - the collecting, editing and re-presentation of information in a communicable visual form might be defined as the very core of the discipline.

At this point, you may have watched the documentary The Secret History of Our Streets - Arnold Circus. This will have given you a glimpse of Arnold Circus in Shoreditch, an area entrenched with historical references and cultural diversity in the east end of London. This is the setting for your first brief as new visual communicators.

We will spend Tuesday documenting the area, paying particular attention attention to the signs, symbols and landmarks which make up the visual language of the street. For example, the things that enable us to navigate through our lives and to find order in an ever more chaotic world. The aim of the first task in to visually document the landscape that you experience during this excursion. You are required to record in your sketchbooks the visual information around you through mark making, and also a series of photographs that support your sketchbook work.

This research will inform your first project which will be a mapping project. You are required to map the Arnold Circus area of London. The signs can the take the form of physical signage and way-finding or a much more conceptual viewpoint and approach.

Things to consider:

What are the most important features of the landscape?
What do I want people to experience by using my map?
How can colour, image, texture etc. building a greater experience for the map user?
